in Strasbourg

In Freiburg and all over Germany, everybody new to a city must register their residence with the local authorities. You must do this after enrollment at the university. This is the first step to for students who additionally have to receive a residence permit. You must to this within the first three months of your stay.

1. Within the first ten days after your arrival, you will have to register as a resident with the City at the city’s Bürgerämt where you live. (see more here). You will have to present your passport and proof of your current address in this city (i.e. a copy of your lease) and fill out this form about the person renting you your apparment/room.

2. Students who received a visa for studies prior to their arrival in Germany must register with the Bürgeramt and apply for a residence permit at the Foreigners’ Registration Office if the visa is not valid for the whole duration of your stay. You must bring:

  • form “Antrag auf Erteilung der Aufenthaltserlaubnis
  • your passport
  • certificate of enrolment from the University of Freiburg (Studienbescheinigung)
  • statement of financial support of about 8.000 EUR per year (e.g. bank statement, notarized parental statement, confirmation of scholarship)
  • proof of health insurance (for further details please see below)
  • proof of residence (copy of the stamped Anmeldung form)
  • 1 passport-sized photo (biometric)
  • 80 € fee for students

In Strasbourg, international students holders of a “long stay visa valid as a residence permit” are exempted from holding a residence permit during the validity of his visa. However, you must have your visa validated by the French Immigration and Integration Office (OFII) within three months after arrival in France.

Other students holder of a long stay visa for studies must apply for a residence permit with the immigration authorities (OFII).
You must fill out the OFII form you should have received with your French visa and send it.

From September to November a dedicated reception desk for students residence permits is set up on the University of Strasbourg website.
Applications for student residence permits must be deposited exclusively during this period at the
Agora of the student building Le Platane

You will receive an appointment with the OFII and bring with you:

  • your passport
  • proof of residence (lease, bill, your lodger written declaration with a copy of his/her ID)
  • medical certificate if required
  • fiscal fee stamps of 60 €
